How to Select an Open-Frame Rack

Open-frame racks provide a standardized mounting structure without the doors and side panels of an enclosed cabinet. They are particularly useful where frequent equipment access, high airflow or extensive cable routing is important.

The main decision is whether the application requires a 2-post or 4-post rack. Two-post racks are commonly used for patch panels, network switches and lighter communication equipment. Four-post racks provide front and rear mounting support for deeper or heavier equipment.

Important Selection Factors

  • 2-post vs. 4-post: Match the rack structure to the mounting requirements and depth of the equipment.
  • Rack height: Determine the number of rack units required for current equipment and future expansion.
  • Mounting holes: Verify square-hole, threaded or other mounting-rail requirements.
  • Equipment depth: Four-post racks may be required for deeper equipment that needs rear support.
  • Load capacity: Confirm the rack supports the combined installed equipment weight.
  • Cable management: Allow room for horizontal and vertical cable-management accessories.
  • Anchoring: Follow rack-manufacturer requirements for floor attachment, seismic restraint and grounding where applicable.

Two-Post vs. Four-Post Racks

Two-post racks are compact and well suited to telecommunications and networking equipment that mounts primarily from the front. Four-post racks provide additional structural support and are generally better suited to deeper switches, appliances, UPS equipment and other devices that require front-and-rear mounting.
