USB 3.x Cable Connections

USB 3.x cable assemblies connect compatible computers, storage devices, peripherals and electronic equipment using higher-speed USB interfaces. Connector format and supported USB generation should both be verified before replacing or adding a cable.

USB Type-A to Type-B Cables

USB Type-A to Type-B connections are commonly used with printers, instruments, external equipment and other peripherals. USB 3.x Type-B connectors differ mechanically from older USB Type-B designs, so equipment compatibility should be checked carefully.

USB 3.x Micro-B Cables

USB 3.x Micro-B connections have been widely used with external hard drives and compact storage equipment. These connectors are physically different from standard USB 2.0 Micro-B plugs and require a compatible device interface.

USB 3.x Extension Cables

Compatible USB extension and active-extension products can increase distance between a host and peripheral. Longer high-speed USB runs should be selected according to the cable design and equipment requirements rather than length alone.

USB Speed and Backward Compatibility

Actual transfer performance depends on the host, peripheral and cable. A USB 3.x cable connected to older equipment may operate at the lower capability supported by the complete connection.

Selecting a USB 3.x Cable

Identify the connector at both devices, then verify the USB generation and required cable length. Pay particular attention to Type-B and Micro-B connector formats because USB 3.x versions can differ physically from earlier USB designs.
