Bulk Wire & Cable

Bulk Wire & Cable

Bulk wire and cable provides the continuous-length cabling used to build permanent infrastructure, field-terminated runs and custom assemblies. The category spans network/data cable, coaxial cable, speaker and audio cable, fiber optic cable, telephone and low-voltage wire, multi-conductor control cable and other specialized constructions.

Choosing bulk cable correctly requires matching electrical or optical performance, conductor construction, shielding, jacket rating, environment, termination method and installation code requirements. Cable is part of a system: connectors, equipment interfaces and installation practices can determine whether the finished run performs to its intended specification.

Choose Cable by Signal or Power Function

Begin with what the cable must carry. Ethernet data, RF/video, speaker-level audio, microphone signals, control circuits and optical data each impose different construction and performance requirements. Avoid choosing cable primarily by conductor count or outside diameter; the intended signal and interface should drive the category.

Conductor Size and Construction

Copper cables may use solid or stranded conductors. Solid conductors are common in permanent horizontal network runs, while stranded conductors provide greater flexibility for patching and movement. Wire gauge affects resistance, voltage drop, current capability and termination compatibility. Always match conductor size to both the electrical load and the connector or terminal hardware.

Shielding and Noise Control

Shielding may be needed around motors, drives, fluorescent lighting or other noise sources, but it must be installed as part of a properly designed grounding strategy. Coaxial cable uses controlled geometry and shielding to maintain impedance, while twisted-pair data cable relies on pair balance and twist geometry. The right noise-control method depends on the signal.

Jacket and Installation Ratings

Cable jackets are selected for environment and code requirements. Plenum, riser, general-purpose, outdoor, direct-burial and industrial constructions are not interchangeable. Verify the required fire rating, moisture resistance, sunlight exposure, oil/chemical resistance and temperature range for the pathway.

Length, Attenuation and Voltage Drop

Longer cable runs introduce signal attenuation or electrical voltage drop. Network and video standards may impose maximum channel lengths. Speaker and DC circuits may need larger conductors over long distances. Fiber has different loss mechanisms and can support much longer distances, but connector and splice losses must be included.

Termination and Connector Compatibility

Bulk cable is only useful if it can be terminated correctly. Match conductor diameter, insulation diameter, shield construction and cable OD to connectors, jacks, plugs, glands and tools. Category-rated network links depend on components and workmanship maintaining pair geometry through the termination.

Selecting Bulk Cable

Define signal type, distance, environment, required rating, conductor material, gauge, shielding and termination method. Then choose the appropriate cable family and verify the complete datasheet. For replacements, do not assume a visually similar cable has the same impedance, bandwidth, voltage rating or jacket approval.

Common Questions

Bulk cable is generally intended for field installation or custom termination rather than arriving with connectors attached. Shielded cable is not automatically better in every environment. Copper-clad conductors should not be treated as equivalent to solid copper where standards or electrical performance require copper. Installation rating and electrical performance are separate specifications and both must be correct.
