How to Select a Standby UPS

A standby UPS normally supplies connected equipment from utility power. If the incoming source fails or moves outside the acceptable operating range, the UPS transfers the load to battery-backed inverter power.

Standby systems are often appropriate where the primary requirement is short-duration battery backup for equipment that can tolerate a brief transfer between utility and battery power. More sensitive applications may require line-interactive or online UPS topology.

  • Connected load: Add the wattage and VA requirements of all equipment connected to battery-backed outlets.
  • Runtime: Determine whether the UPS only needs to support an orderly shutdown or maintain operation longer.
  • Outlet configuration: Verify receptacle type, quantity and battery-backed versus surge-only outlets.
  • Input voltage: Match the electrical system where the UPS will be installed.
  • Output waveform: Confirm compatibility with the connected power supplies and electronics.
  • Battery replacement: Determine whether the battery is user replaceable and identify the compatible replacement pack.
  • Surge protection: Review the protection provided for power and communication connections.
  • Monitoring: Check for USB or other shutdown and status-management features.

Standby vs. Line-Interactive UPS

Standby UPS systems primarily provide battery backup when utility power becomes unacceptable. Line-interactive systems generally add automatic voltage regulation so selected voltage variations can be corrected without using the battery. Applications with frequent voltage fluctuations may benefit from the additional regulation provided by a line-interactive design.
