How to Select an Industrial Pilot Light

Pilot lights provide a clear visual indication of equipment and process conditions. They are commonly used to show power on, motor operation, equipment availability, warnings, faults and alarm states.

Some pilot lights are supplied as complete assemblies with an integrated light source. Others require separate components such as a lens, lamp holder, bulb, LED module or voltage-reduction transformer. Review the product configuration carefully before ordering.

Important Selection Factors

  • Operating voltage: Match the indicator to the control voltage, including whether the supply is AC or DC.
  • Mounting diameter: Confirm the panel-hole size and allowable panel thickness.
  • Light source: LED indicators generally offer long service life and low power consumption, while some existing systems use replaceable incandescent lamps.
  • Lens color: Choose a color appropriate for the equipment status or alarm function.
  • Terminal style: Options may include screw, fast-on, solder or wire-lead connections.
  • Complete or component assembly: Determine whether a lamp, holder, lens or transformer must be ordered separately.
  • Environmental rating: Confirm protection against dust, moisture, oil, vibration and washdown when required.

Common Indicator Colors

Indicator-color meanings depend on the equipment design and facility standards. Red is often associated with a stopped, fault or hazardous condition; green commonly indicates normal or running status; amber may indicate a warning or abnormal condition; and blue or white may identify a special function. Verify the intended control-system convention before replacing an indicator.
