How to Select an Online UPS System

An online UPS continuously converts incoming AC power to DC and then back to AC through an inverter before supplying the connected equipment. This double-conversion design separates the load from many variations on the incoming electrical source and provides battery-backed power when the normal source is interrupted.

Online UPS systems are commonly selected for servers, industrial controls, communications systems, process equipment and other loads where power quality and continuity are especially important. Selection should account for both the steady-state load and temporary startup demand.

Important Selection Factors

  • Input voltage: Match the available source voltage and frequency.
  • Output voltage: Confirm the voltage required by the connected equipment.
  • VA and watt capacity: Compare both ratings to the actual connected load.
  • Runtime: Determine how long equipment must remain powered during an outage.
  • Phase: Verify single-phase or three-phase requirements.
  • External batteries: Determine whether additional battery cabinets are needed for extended runtime.
  • Form factor: Confirm rack, tower, floor or other mounting requirements.
  • Communications: Review USB, network, serial, relay-contact or remote-monitoring needs.
  • Bypass: Determine whether maintenance or static bypass capability is required.

Online vs. Line-Interactive UPS

A line-interactive UPS normally supplies the load from utility power and transfers to battery when necessary. An online UPS continuously supplies the load through its inverter, making it appropriate for applications requiring a higher level of isolation from incoming power disturbances.
