How to Select a DIN-Rail Surge Protective Device

DIN-rail surge protective devices provide compact transient protection inside industrial control and electrical enclosures. They can be installed alongside power supplies, relays, terminal blocks, PLC equipment and other DIN-rail-mounted components.

The SPD must be compatible with the voltage and grounding arrangement of the protected circuit. AC power circuits, DC power circuits and signal circuits can require different surge-protection devices and should not be treated as interchangeable applications.

Important Selection Factors

  • AC or DC application: Select a device specifically rated for the protected circuit.
  • Nominal voltage: Match the normal operating voltage of the circuit.
  • Maximum continuous operating voltage: Verify the allowable continuous voltage across the SPD.
  • Discharge-current rating: Compare the manufacturer’s stated surge capability.
  • Protective modes: Confirm protection between the required conductors and ground.

Protecting Industrial Control Panels

Control panels may contain PLCs, communication devices, power supplies, sensors and other electronics that can be affected by transient voltage. DIN-rail SPDs allow surge protection to be installed near these devices while maintaining a compact panel layout.

The protection device should be coordinated with upstream surge protection and installed with appropriately short connection conductors according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
