Contactor Coils

Shop replacement contactor coils used to operate industrial contactors and motor-control devices. When the specified control voltage is applied, the coil creates the magnetic force that closes or opens the contactor’s power contacts.

Compare coils by control voltage, frequency and compatible contactor series. A replacement coil must match both the required electrical rating and the exact contactor frame or model for which it was designed.

How to Select a Replacement Contactor Coil

A contactor coil is the electromagnetic component that operates the contactor. Applying the specified control voltage energizes the coil and moves the contact assembly. When power is removed, the contactor normally returns to its unenergized position.

Replacement coils are not universal. Coils with the same voltage may have different dimensions, terminal arrangements, electrical characteristics and mounting configurations. Always verify compatibility with the complete contactor model or frame before ordering.

Important Selection Factors

  • Control voltage: Match the voltage supplied by the control circuit, such as 24 VAC, 120 VAC, 230 VAC, 277 VAC or 480 VAC.
  • AC or DC operation: Do not substitute an AC coil for a DC coil, or a DC coil for an AC coil, unless the manufacturer specifically permits it.
  • Frequency: AC coils may be rated for 50 Hz, 60 Hz or both. Confirm the required frequency when it is specified.
  • Contactor compatibility: Match the coil to the manufacturer, contactor series and frame size.
  • Terminal configuration: Check the position and style of the coil terminals against the existing contactor.
  • Part-number suffix: Voltage and frequency are often identified by a suffix or code within the manufacturer’s complete part number.

Common Signs of a Coil Problem

A contactor that will not pull in, chatters excessively, produces unusual noise or has a visibly overheated coil may have a coil or control-circuit problem. Before replacing the coil, verify the actual control voltage at the contactor and inspect the mechanical assembly for binding, contamination or damage.

Repeated coil failures can indicate incorrect voltage, excessive voltage drop, unstable control power, an incompatible frequency or a contactor mechanism that is not closing completely. Correct the underlying condition before installing another replacement.
