How to Select a Drive Isolation Transformer

Drive isolation transformers are commonly used between an industrial power source and variable-frequency drives or other power-electronic motor-control equipment. In addition to providing electrical isolation, they can help establish the required voltage and provide a transformer specifically suited to demanding drive applications.

Selection should be based on the electrical requirements of the complete drive system rather than motor horsepower alone. The transformer must be sized for the connected load, input and output voltages, phase and installation conditions.

Important Selection Factors

  • Input voltage: Match the available facility or distribution voltage.
  • Output voltage: Match the voltage required by the connected drive equipment.
  • Phase: Confirm the transformer and drive system use the correct phase configuration.
  • kVA rating: Size the transformer for the drive load and manufacturer application requirements.
  • Temperature rise: Review thermal performance for the intended duty and ambient conditions.

Drive Isolation vs. General-Purpose Transformers

A general-purpose transformer may provide the required voltage transformation, but drive isolation transformers are intended for the electrical characteristics and duty associated with motor drives and power-electronic loads. When replacing an existing unit, match the original transformer type unless the application has been reviewed for an approved alternative.
