How to Select an Industrial Pushbutton

Industrial pushbuttons provide manual commands to machine and process-control circuits. Depending on the application, a pushbutton may start equipment, stop operation, reset a fault, initiate a cycle or provide an emergency-stop command.

Some products are supplied as complete assemblies, while others require a separate operator, mounting collar, contact block, lamp holder and light source. Components should normally be selected from the same manufacturer and compatible product series.

Important Selection Factors

• Mounting diameter: Match the pushbutton to the panel opening, commonly 16 mm, 22 mm or 30 mm.
• Momentary or maintained action: A momentary operator returns when released, while a maintained operator remains in its selected state.
• Contact configuration: Verify the required normally open and normally closed contacts.
• Operator style: Options may include flush, extended, guarded, mushroom-head and dual-function designs.
• Illumination: For illuminated models, confirm the light color, voltage and replaceable lighting components.
• Color and legend: Select the appropriate operator color and marking for the command.
• Environmental rating: Confirm suitability for dust, water, oil, washdown or outdoor exposure.

Emergency-Stop Pushbuttons

Emergency-stop operators are commonly designed with a large red mushroom head and a maintained latching action. Reset methods may include pull-to-release, twist-to-release or key release. Selection and installation should follow the machine-control design and applicable safety requirements.
