Selecting a Micro Data Center

Micro data centers bring data-center-style infrastructure closer to the equipment and users that depend on it. They are commonly deployed in retail, manufacturing, healthcare, offices, telecommunications sites and other edge locations where dedicated data-center space may not be available.

Unlike a basic rack enclosure, a micro data center may be selected as part of a complete infrastructure approach that includes physical protection, power distribution, UPS equipment, monitoring, environmental management and security.

Important Selection Factors

  • Rack capacity: Determine the U-space required for servers, switches, UPS equipment and other devices.
  • Physical size: Verify the system fits the available installation area.
  • Power requirements: Account for UPS capacity, distribution and available facility power.
  • Cooling: Evaluate equipment heat load and the available cooling strategy.
  • Security: Consider locking, access control and physical-protection requirements.
  • Monitoring: Determine whether remote environmental, power or equipment monitoring is required.
  • Environment: Review dust, temperature, humidity and other site conditions.
  • Expansion: Leave capacity for anticipated equipment growth where practical.
