How to Select a Power Line Filter

Electrical noise can travel along power conductors and interfere with controls, instrumentation, communication equipment and other sensitive electronics. Power line filters are designed to attenuate selected conducted disturbances before they reach connected equipment.

Some industrial filters also incorporate surge-protection functions. Filtering and surge protection address different electrical conditions, so review the complete product specification rather than assuming one function automatically provides the other.

Important Selection Factors

  • System voltage: Match the filter to the nominal operating voltage of the circuit.
  • Current rating: Select a filter capable of continuously carrying the connected load current.
  • Phase: Confirm compatibility with the electrical-system configuration.
  • Noise characteristics: Identify the frequency range and type of conducted interference being addressed.
  • Mounting method: Confirm DIN-rail, panel or other installation requirements.
  • Surge protection: Determine whether transient protection is included and review its ratings where required.
  • Leakage and grounding: Review grounding requirements and any leakage-current considerations for the application.
  • Environment: Verify temperature, enclosure and applicable industrial approvals.

Power Line Filter vs. Surge Protector

A power line filter primarily reduces conducted electrical noise over a specified frequency range. A surge protective device limits short-duration transient overvoltage. Some products combine both functions, but a filter and an SPD should not automatically be treated as interchangeable.
