Selecting Power Conversion and Protection Equipment

Electrical equipment may require voltage conversion, regulated DC power, temporary battery backup or protection from disturbances on the incoming power line. The correct solution depends on the source power, connected load, operating environment and the specific electrical problem that must be addressed.

Transformers change voltage levels and can provide electrical isolation. Industrial power supplies convert incoming AC power into regulated DC power for control devices and automation equipment. UPS systems provide temporary backup during power interruptions, while power conditioners and surge protective devices address different types of voltage disturbances.

Major Product Families

  • Transformers: Convert voltage, provide isolation or adapt electrical power for control, distribution and equipment loads.
  • Industrial power supplies: Provide regulated DC output for PLCs, sensors, relays, communication equipment and control systems.
  • Uninterruptible power supplies: Support connected equipment temporarily during power interruptions and selected voltage disturbances.
  • Power conditioners: Regulate or condition incoming voltage for equipment sensitive to power-quality problems.
  • Surge protective devices: Help limit transient overvoltage reaching connected equipment.

Important Selection Factors

  • Available input voltage, phase and frequency
  • Required output voltage and AC or DC output
  • Load current, VA, kVA or wattage requirements
  • Required isolation, regulation, backup or surge-protection function
  • Starting current and temporary overload requirements
  • DIN-rail, panel, chassis, wall or floor mounting
  • Indoor, outdoor or hazardous-location requirements
  • Applicable approvals and environmental ratings
