Deep-Cycle AGM Batteries

Deep-Cycle AGM Batteries

Deep-cycle AGM batteries are valve-regulated lead-acid batteries designed to tolerate repeated discharge and recharge more effectively than ordinary standby batteries. They are used in mobility equipment, portable power, floor-care equipment, recreational systems and other applications where the battery is expected to cycle routinely rather than remain fully charged for most of its life.

A deep-cycle battery should be selected around usable energy, expected depth of discharge, cycle frequency, charging method, physical fit and current demand. The largest amp-hour number is not always the best choice if the charger, enclosure or load profile is mismatched.

Deep-Cycle Versus Standby Batteries

Standby batteries are optimized to remain on float and deliver occasional backup power. Deep-cycle products use construction intended to withstand repeated removal and restoration of capacity. Using a standby battery in a daily cycling application can lead to rapid capacity loss, while using an expensive deep-cycle product in a light standby application may provide little benefit.

Depth of Discharge and Cycle Life

Cycle life generally improves when routine discharges are shallower. Repeatedly taking a battery to a very low state of charge is harder on lead-acid chemistry than partial cycling. System sizing should therefore consider not only minimum runtime but also the desired long-term cycle life.

Charging Requirements

Proper recharge is essential after every cycle. Chargers should match AGM voltage requirements and provide suitable bulk, absorption and float behavior for the application. Chronic undercharging promotes sulfation, while excessive charge voltage accelerates aging. Verify charger compatibility when changing battery type or capacity.

Series and Parallel Banks

Mobility and equipment applications may use two or more batteries in series or parallel. Batteries in a bank should be matched in model, age and condition. Cable lengths and connections should be arranged to minimize imbalance, especially in parallel configurations.

Physical Fit, Terminals and Mobility Loads

Deep-cycle batteries may be installed in trays, mobility devices or compact equipment where dimensions and terminal position are critical. Confirm case size, weight, terminal type and polarity. For motor loads, also consider peak current during startup or climbing rather than evaluating only average energy consumption.

Choosing a Deep-Cycle AGM Battery

Identify system voltage, daily energy use, maximum discharge, recharge time, available charger and physical envelope. Then compare cycle-life curves and discharge data for candidate batteries. For replacements, verify that the equipment manufacturer permits the proposed battery series and capacity.

Common Questions

Deep-cycle does not mean the battery should be fully discharged every cycle. Shallower cycling generally supports longer service life. AGM batteries still need correct charging even though they do not require routine water addition. A higher-capacity battery may take longer to recharge with the existing charger.

Energy Sizing for Cyclic Equipment

Estimate daily energy use rather than sizing only from the equipment nameplate. Motors, pumps and mobility equipment can have changing loads during acceleration, grades or heavy work. Include realistic duty cycle and leave reserve capacity so routine operation does not force the battery to an unnecessarily deep state of discharge.

Need Help Selecting Deep-Cycle AGM Batteries?

Wallco can help compare specifications, compatibility and application requirements when you are selecting new components or replacing an existing part. Providing the manufacturer and model of the equipment you are connecting to, along with key electrical, mechanical and environmental requirements, helps narrow the correct choice.
