Control Panels & Enclosures

Control panels and enclosures protect electrical, automation and instrumentation components from accidental contact and environmental conditions while providing an organized structure for mounting and wiring. The enclosure is part of the system design: material, ingress protection, size, heat dissipation and installation environment all affect equipment reliability and serviceability.

Begin with location and exposure. Indoor dry areas have different requirements from outdoor, washdown, dusty or corrosive environments. Select an appropriate NEMA or IP protection level, then consider enclosure material such as painted steel, stainless steel, aluminum or non-metallic construction.

How to Select Control Panels & Enclosures

Begin with location and exposure. Indoor dry areas have different requirements from outdoor, washdown, dusty or corrosive environments. Select an appropriate NEMA or IP protection level, then consider enclosure material such as painted steel, stainless steel, aluminum or non-metallic construction.

Size the enclosure for more than the component footprints. Allow space for wire bending, terminal access, duct, DIN rail, heat-producing devices and future service. If drives, power supplies, transformers or contactors generate significant heat, evaluate internal temperature rise and whether ventilation, fans, heat exchangers or air conditioning are required without compromising the environmental rating.

Where Control Panels & Enclosures Are Used

Industrial enclosures house PLCs, relays, motor controls, power supplies, networking equipment, terminals, instrumentation and machine-safety components. They range from small junction and operator boxes to large wall-mount and floor-standing control cabinets.

Compatibility, Installation & Replacement Considerations

Do not assume a higher enclosure number is simply “better” in every respect; NEMA types describe specific environmental protections. Cutting holes, adding vents or installing incorrectly rated cable entries can also reduce the protection of the finished enclosure. Use compatible glands, hubs and accessories and follow the enclosure manufacturer installation instructions.

Important Design & Application Notes

A good enclosure layout supports both initial wiring and future maintenance. Components that require adjustment or replacement should remain accessible, high-voltage and low-voltage wiring should be routed appropriately, and heat-producing devices should not be crowded against temperature-sensitive electronics. Thoughtful spare space can also prevent a minor future modification from forcing replacement of the entire enclosure.

Practical Selection Guidance

To select an enclosure, list the installation environment, required protection type, internal equipment dimensions, heat load, mounting method, cable-entry locations and preferred material. For retrofits, also check door swing and available wall or machine space.

Frequently Asked Selection Question

How much spare enclosure space should be allowed?

There is no single percentage that fits every design. Allow practical room for wire bending, heat dissipation, service access, duct, terminals and reasonable future changes while observing component spacing requirements.

Choosing the Right Control Panels & Enclosures for an Industrial Application

A reliable selection comes from matching the device to the actual electrical system, load, environment and control function rather than choosing from a single headline rating. Record the existing manufacturer and part number when replacing equipment, and compare all relevant electrical, mechanical and environmental specifications before substituting another series.

Wallco supports industrial users, OEMs, integrators and maintenance teams that need help narrowing a replacement or choosing a component for a new panel or machine. Providing the application details up front helps identify the correct product family and avoids problems caused by physically similar but electrically different components.
