Connector Crimping & Installation Tools

Connector installation quality depends heavily on using tooling that matches the contact, terminal or plug being installed. This category includes crimp tools, modular plug tools, insertion/extraction tools and related hand tools used to terminate or service electronic, telecom and network connectors.

Crimping is not simply squeezing a terminal onto a conductor. The correct die geometry controls conductor compression, insulation support and mechanical retention. Modular plugs also require tooling matched to the plug format and contact pattern, while IDC systems depend on seating conductors to the proper depth without damaging the insulation-displacement contact.

Choose tooling by the connector or contact series, conductor size, termination technology and whether the application requires field-service convenience or controlled production-quality crimps.

Selecting Connector Crimping & Installation Tools

For modular plugs, verify the plug format the tool supports, such as 4-position, 6-position or 8-position plugs, and whether the tool also strips and cuts the cable type being used.

For discrete crimp contacts, match the crimp die to the terminal series and wire gauge. A visually similar contact can require a different die profile, crimp height or insulation-support geometry.

For coaxial connectors, verify cable group and connector style because center-contact and ferrule dimensions vary. Ratcheting tools can improve repeatability by requiring a complete crimp cycle before release.

Insertion and extraction tools are used to install or remove removable contacts without damaging the connector housing. When servicing high-density connectors, the correct contact tool can prevent bent retention tangs, damaged cavities and intermittent connections.
