How to Select an IT Rack or Enclosure

A properly selected rack or enclosure provides the physical structure needed to mount, organize and protect network, server, power and communication equipment. Selection begins with the equipment being installed, but available space, cable routing, airflow, service access and future expansion should also be considered.

Rack-mounted equipment is typically sized in rack units, or U. The required enclosure height should provide enough usable rack space for current equipment while leaving appropriate room for cable management, power distribution, cooling and future additions.

Important Selection Factors

  • Rack height: Determine the total number of rack units required for installed equipment and planned expansion.
  • Mounting style: Choose between floor-standing and wall-mounted configurations based on equipment size and available space.
  • Equipment depth: Verify that the enclosure is deep enough for servers, UPS systems, switches and cable connections.
  • Width: Standard-width racks suit most equipment, while wider enclosures can provide additional space for vertical cable management.
  • Load capacity: Confirm the rack can support the combined weight of installed equipment.
  • Doors and side panels: Consider security, ventilation and service-access requirements.
  • Airflow: Review ventilation and cooling requirements for heat-producing equipment.
  • Cable management: Allow sufficient space for network, power and communication cabling.

Floor-Standing vs. Wall-Mount Racks

Floor-standing racks provide greater equipment capacity and depth for servers, large UPS systems and data-center infrastructure. Wall-mount racks conserve floor space and are often well suited to switches, patch panels, smaller UPS systems and distributed network installations.
