How to Select an Industrial Power Supply

Industrial power supplies convert incoming electrical power into the regulated DC voltage required by PLCs, sensors, relays, communication equipment, instrumentation and other control-system devices. The power supply should provide stable output under normal operating conditions and during temporary changes in load.

Selection should account for every connected load, including startup current, temporary peak demand and future expansion. Environmental conditions such as temperature, vibration, moisture, electrical noise and installation space can also affect the appropriate design.

Important Selection Factors

  • Input voltage: Verify the available AC or DC input and allowable operating range.
  • Output voltage: Match the DC voltage required by the connected equipment.
  • Output current: Add the current demand of all connected loads and allow suitable capacity.
  • Output power: Confirm the wattage rating at the expected operating temperature.
  • Startup and peak current: Account for loads that temporarily draw more than their steady-state current.
  • Mounting method: Choose DIN-rail, panel, chassis, machine or enclosed mounting as required.
  • Number of outputs: Determine whether the application requires one or multiple regulated outputs.
  • Redundancy: Critical systems may require redundant supplies and a compatible redundancy module.
  • Environmental rating: Review temperature, derating, humidity, vibration and hazardous-location requirements.

DIN-Rail vs. Chassis-Mount Power Supplies

DIN-rail power supplies are designed for convenient installation in industrial control panels and are commonly used with modular control equipment. Chassis- and panel-mount designs may be preferred when the power supply must fit a machine, enclosure or existing equipment layout.
