XLR & Microphone Cables

XLR microphone cables are a standard interconnection for professional balanced audio. A typical three-pin XLR cable carries two signal conductors plus shield, allowing compatible balanced inputs and outputs to reject noise over longer runs than ordinary unbalanced connections.

Cable quality depends on conductor construction, shielding, connector durability, strain relief, flexibility and length. Although commonly called microphone cables, XLR assemblies are also used for balanced line-level audio and certain control applications, so pinout and intended use should be confirmed.

Balanced XLR Audio

In standard three-pin balanced audio, the two signal conductors carry opposite-polarity versions of the signal while the shield provides screening. Differential inputs reject noise that couples similarly onto both conductors. This makes XLR particularly useful around stage lighting, amplifiers and other electrically active equipment.

Shielding and Flexibility

Braided, served or combination shields help protect low-level signals. Portable microphone cables should remain flexible after repeated coiling and resist kinking, while installed cables may prioritize compact routing. The connector strain relief should grip the cable jacket so pulling force is not transferred directly to solder or termination points.

Connector Quality

XLR connectors use a locking mechanism that helps prevent accidental disconnection. Shell durability, contact plating and boot design can matter in touring or production environments. Verify male/female orientation and pin count; not every XLR connector is a three-pin analog-audio connection.

Length and Routing

Balanced audio tolerates substantial cable lengths, but cable capacitance and installation environment still matter. Avoid tightly bundling microphone lines with AC mains or high-current speaker wiring. If hum appears, verify equipment grounding and balanced wiring before replacing cables indiscriminately.

Microphone Cable Selection

Match connector genders, choose a practical length, and consider handling frequency, stage use, permanent installation and environmental exposure. For critical recording and broadcast paths, consistent shielding and connector workmanship matter more than cosmetic cable features.

XLR Beyond Microphones

Three-pin XLR is strongly associated with microphone audio, but XLR shells are also used for line-level audio and other specialized circuits. Additional pin-count versions exist as well. This is why replacement work should confirm pin count and equipment function. A familiar-looking XLR cable should not be inserted into lighting, control or power-related equipment unless the wiring standard is known.

Ordering and Replacement Checklist

Before ordering xlr & microphone cables, record the equipment interfaces at both ends, the required electrical or signal standard, cable length, installation environment and any existing part number or cable marking. For replacements, matching only the connector can be misleading; confirm the underlying signal type, impedance, conductor configuration, performance rating and environmental requirements. Providing those details helps Wallco narrow the correct product and avoid compatibility problems.

Common Questions

Cable performance is a system issue: the source, destination, connectors, cable construction, length and installation conditions all contribute to the result. A cable that physically fits is not automatically electrically compatible, and a higher advertised category or bandwidth does not correct a mismatched interface. When in doubt, start with the equipment manufacturer specifications and choose a cable assembly or bulk cable that explicitly supports those requirements.

Need Help Selecting XLR & Microphone Cables?

Wallco can help compare cable construction, connectors, ratings and application requirements when you are selecting a new installation product or replacing an existing cable. If available, provide the connected equipment models, existing cable markings, required length and installation environment so the options can be narrowed accurately.
