Storage and drive cables connect hard drives, solid-state drives, optical drives and legacy disk hardware to host controllers, backplanes and external storage interfaces. This category includes SATA and eSATA signal cables, IDE/PATA ribbon and round cables, legacy drive interconnects and related storage adapters.
The correct cable depends on the storage interface used by both the host and the drive. SATA, eSATA and parallel ATA/IDE are physically and electrically different interfaces, and a connector that appears similar is not necessarily interchangeable.
For replacement or service work, confirm the drive interface, connector orientation, number of devices supported, internal versus external use and required cable length before ordering.
SATA is the common serial storage interface used with many hard drives, SSDs and optical drives. Internal SATA uses separate signal and power connections, so replacing a drive cable requires identifying which connection is needed and checking connector orientation and available clearance inside the equipment.
eSATA extends Serial ATA outside the computer chassis with an external connector and shielded cabling. SATA-IO defines eSATA specifically for external storage and notes shielded cable lengths up to 2 meters, so an internal SATA cable should not automatically be treated as an external eSATA substitute.
Older systems may use parallel ATA, commonly called IDE or PATA. These installations can use 40-pin device connectors and multi-device cable assemblies, and some higher-speed ATA applications use 80-conductor cabling while retaining the 40-pin connector. Match the replacement to the controller, drive and original cable arrangement rather than choosing by connector size alone.
Legacy storage service can also involve adapter cables that bridge mechanical connector formats. A passive adapter changes the physical connection only; it does not necessarily convert one storage protocol into another. Confirm whether the application needs a simple pin-format adapter or an active electronic converter.
