How to Select an Industrial Selector Switch

Selector switches allow an operator to choose between two or more control states. They are frequently used to select manual or automatic operation, change motor direction, enable local or remote control, or choose between operating modes.

A selector-switch assembly may include the front operator, mounting collar and one or more rear contact blocks. The physical operator position does not by itself identify the electrical switching sequence, so the required contact operation must also be verified.

Important Selection Factors

• Number of positions: Choose a two-position, three-position or multi-position operator.
• Maintained or spring return: Maintained switches remain in position, while spring-return switches return automatically.
• Contact sequence: Verify which contacts open or close in every operator position.
• Contact configuration: Determine the required number of normally open and normally closed contacts.
• Mounting diameter: Match the operator to the existing panel opening.
• Key operation: A keyed selector can restrict operation to authorized personnel.
• Environmental rating: Confirm the required protection against dust, moisture, oil and washdown.

Maintained vs. Spring-Return Operation

A maintained selector stays in the chosen position until it is manually changed. A spring-return selector returns to a center or normal position when released. Some three-position operators use a combination, such as maintained operation in one direction and spring return in the other.
