PoE Injectors and Splitters for Ethernet Networks

Power over Ethernet equipment allows electrical power and network communications to share compatible Ethernet cabling. This can simplify installation by reducing the need for a separate electrical power connection at certain network devices.

PoE injectors and splitters perform different functions within the network. An injector adds power to a compatible Ethernet connection, while a splitter separates power and network data at the remote end for equipment that requires separate power and data connections.

What Is a PoE Injector?

A PoE injector adds electrical power to an Ethernet network connection. It is commonly installed between a non-PoE network source and a compatible powered device when the existing Ethernet switch does not provide the required Power over Ethernet capability.

The injector typically receives an Ethernet data connection from the network equipment and combines that connection with electrical power for transmission over compatible Ethernet cabling.

This can be useful when only a small number of powered devices need PoE and replacing the existing network switch with a PoE-capable model would be unnecessary.

What Is a PoE Splitter?

A PoE splitter performs the opposite function. It receives compatible Power over Ethernet and separates the connection into Ethernet data and a separate DC power output for the connected device.

A splitter may be useful when the network infrastructure supplies PoE but the endpoint requires separate data and power connections. The splitter's output voltage and device requirements should be checked carefully before installation.

PoE Injectors, Splitters and Boosters

  • PoE Injectors: Add compatible electrical power to an Ethernet connection when the upstream network equipment does not provide the required PoE output.
  • PoE Splitters: Separate the power and data portions of a compatible PoE connection at the remote device.
  • PoE Boosters: Depending on the product design, may provide or manage PoE power for multiple compatible Ethernet connections or specialized network applications.
  • Industrial PoE Injectors: PoE equipment intended for industrial networking applications and installation environments.

Choosing the Right PoE Equipment

PoE products should be selected according to both the Ethernet network and the electrical requirements of the powered device. Physical RJ45 compatibility alone does not establish that two devices can operate together.

  • Powered-device requirements: Identify the network device that will receive power and determine its supported PoE requirements.
  • Power output: Verify that the injector or other PoE source can provide the amount of power required by the connected device.
  • PoE compatibility: Check the PoE capabilities of the source, injector, splitter and powered device.
  • Network speed: Confirm that the PoE equipment supports the Ethernet data rate required by the network.
  • Splitter output: For a PoE splitter, verify the DC output voltage and connector requirements of the connected equipment.
  • Port count: Determine whether the application requires a single PoE connection or equipment supporting multiple ports.
  • Installation environment: Industrial applications may require different mounting, power-input and environmental characteristics than conventional commercial networking equipment.

PoE Injector vs. PoE Switch

A PoE-capable Ethernet switch can provide both data switching and electrical power from multiple Ethernet ports. A PoE injector performs a more focused function by adding power to a network connection that originates from another Ethernet device.

An injector can be a practical choice when an existing switch provides suitable network connectivity but only one or a few remote devices require PoE. Where many powered devices must be supported from one location, a suitable PoE switch may provide a more centralized solution.

The appropriate approach depends on the number of powered devices, power requirements, existing network equipment and future expansion plans.

PoE Splitter Applications

A splitter can allow certain network devices without a direct PoE power input to operate from PoE-enabled infrastructure by separating the incoming connection into data and power.

The device must still be compatible with the splitter's electrical output. Before installation, verify output voltage, available power and the physical power connection required by the endpoint.

PoE for Cameras and Wireless Equipment

Power over Ethernet is commonly used for network devices installed away from convenient electrical outlets. Examples can include IP cameras, wireless access points and other Ethernet-enabled communications equipment.

Providing power through network cabling can reduce the need for separate power wiring at the device location, but the network design still needs to account for power requirements, cable distance and equipment compatibility.

Industrial Power over Ethernet

Industrial Ethernet applications may use PoE equipment near automation systems, controls or equipment installed outside conventional office environments. In these applications, the mounting method, input power and specified operating environment of the injector or related device should be considered in addition to its network characteristics.

Industrial PoE equipment should be selected according to the requirements of the complete communications system rather than simply because it provides an Ethernet connection.

PoE Injector and Splitter Applications

PoE injectors, splitters and related equipment may be used in applications including:

  • IP surveillance cameras
  • Wireless access points
  • VoIP and communications devices
  • Building automation networks
  • Security and access-control systems
  • Commercial Ethernet networks
  • Industrial Ethernet systems
  • Remote network equipment
  • Network upgrades
  • Retrofit installations using non-PoE Ethernet switches

Verify Power and Network Compatibility

Before selecting a PoE injector or splitter, identify the requirements of the powered device and the capabilities of the existing network equipment. Confirm the required network speed, power requirements and PoE compatibility.

For splitters, verify the required DC output voltage and device connection. For injectors, make sure the unit can provide appropriate power to the intended endpoint while supporting the required network connection.
