Network cable preparation begins with removing the outer jacket without damaging the twisted pairs beneath it. Cable strippers designed for twisted-pair construction can provide more consistent jacket removal than general-purpose knives or cutters.
Stripping tools may support Cat 5e, Cat 6 and other common twisted-pair cable sizes. Cable outside diameter can vary significantly by jacket construction, shielding and manufacturer, so the tool should be matched to the actual cable rather than Category rating alone.
Unshielded and shielded twisted-pair cables can require different preparation steps. Shielded constructions may include foil, braid, drain wire or additional jacket layers that must be handled correctly before the connector or jack is terminated.
Adjustable stripping tools allow blade depth or cable diameter to be set for different jacket constructions. Proper adjustment helps remove the jacket while reducing the risk of nicking conductor insulation underneath.
Combination tools can cut network cable to length and remove the outer jacket with one hand tool. These can be convenient for field installation, but the stripping section still needs to be compatible with the cable diameter and construction.
