How to Select a Limit Switch

A limit switch uses physical contact with a moving object or machine component to change the state of its electrical contacts. Common applications include confirming equipment position, detecting the end of travel, counting objects, controlling conveyors and providing machine interlocks.

Important selection factors include actuator type, contact configuration, operating force, travel, current and voltage ratings, mounting method, connection type and enclosure or IP rating. The switch housing and actuator should also be suitable for the temperature, moisture, dust, vibration and mechanical conditions of the application.

Available styles include roller lever, plunger, rotary and other industrial limit switches. Products are organized generically so comparable switches from different manufacturers can be reviewed within the same categories and technical filters.
