Selecting a Floor-Standing Rack or Enclosure

Floor-standing racks are designed for applications requiring more capacity, greater equipment depth or higher load capability than typical wall-mounted systems. They are commonly used for servers, network switches, storage equipment, rack-mounted UPS systems and power-distribution equipment.

The enclosure should be sized around the deepest and heaviest installed equipment while also providing sufficient space for power connections, network cabling and airflow. Future equipment additions should be considered before selecting the final rack height.

  • Rack-unit capacity: Common full-size racks may provide 42U, 45U, 48U, 52U or other capacities.
  • Depth: Ensure adequate clearance for servers, UPS systems, connectors and cable bend radius.
  • Width: Wider racks may provide additional room for high-density cable management and networking installations.
  • Static and dynamic load: Confirm the structure supports the installed equipment and any mobility requirements.
  • Doors: Perforated doors can support front-to-back airflow, while other configurations may prioritize security or noise control.
  • Side panels: Determine whether removable or locking side panels are required.
  • Casters and leveling feet: Review positioning and final installation requirements.
  • Grounding: Follow the equipment and rack manufacturer’s bonding and grounding requirements.

Server vs. Networking Enclosures

Server racks often prioritize equipment depth, load capacity and front-to-back airflow. Networking enclosures may provide additional width or cable-management space for switches, patch panels and large bundles of communication cabling. Some rack families are designed to support both applications.
