D-Subminiature Electronic Connectors

D-sub connectors are multi-contact electrical connectors commonly used in computers, communications equipment, instrumentation, industrial controls and electronic devices. The characteristic metal shell provides mechanical alignment and can also provide shielding when used with an appropriate connector assembly.

DB9, DB15, DB25 and Other Sizes

D-sub connector families include several shell sizes and contact arrangements. Common applications use 9-, 15-, 25-, 37- and other contact configurations, as well as high-density versions that place additional contacts within a similar shell size.

Always verify the actual contact count rather than relying only on the common DB-style name used for the connector.

Male and Female Connectors

D-sub connectors are available in plug and receptacle configurations. Connector gender should be verified along with the mating equipment before ordering.

Solder, Crimp, IDC and PCB Termination

Depending on the connector design, D-sub products may use solder-cup contacts, crimp contacts, insulation-displacement termination or direct PCB mounting. The appropriate termination method depends on the cable, board design and assembly process.

Standard and High-Density D-Sub Connectors

Standard-density and high-density D-sub connectors use different contact arrangements. Products with similar external shell dimensions may not be electrically or mechanically interchangeable.

Backshells and Connector Hoods

Backshells and hoods provide mechanical protection, cable strain relief and, in some designs, shielding around the terminated connector. Select the backshell according to connector shell size, cable diameter and cable-entry direction.

Gender Changers and Passive Adapters

D-sub adapters and gender changers can change the physical interface between compatible connectors. These products generally do not convert the underlying electrical signal or communications protocol.

Mounting Hardware

Screw locks, jack screws, thumbscrews and related hardware help secure mating D-sub connectors. Thread type and hardware dimensions should be matched to the connector and equipment panel.

Common Applications

  • Industrial control equipment
  • Serial communication interfaces
  • Computer and peripheral equipment
  • Instrumentation
  • Test equipment
  • Machine controls
  • Custom cable assemblies
  • Electronic equipment repair
