External UPS Battery Modules

How to Select an External UPS Battery Module

External battery modules increase the stored energy available to a compatible UPS, extending the amount of time connected equipment can remain powered after normal utility power is lost. They do not increase the UPS output-power rating; the UPS must still be properly sized for the connected load.

Battery modules must be electrically and mechanically compatible with the UPS. Different UPS families can use different battery voltages, communication methods, connectors and charging requirements, even when their output-power ratings are similar.

• UPS compatibility: Confirm that the battery module is approved for the exact UPS model.
• Battery voltage: Match the DC battery-bus requirements of the UPS.
• Required runtime: Determine the backup duration needed at the actual connected load.
• Number of modules: Review how many external battery packs the UPS can support.

• Charging time: Additional battery capacity can increase the time required to return to full charge.
• Mounting: Confirm rack, tower, floor, DIN-rail or cabinet installation requirements.
• Environment: Review temperature and ventilation requirements because battery performance and life are temperature dependent.

Runtime vs. UPS Capacity

Adding external batteries increases runtime, not the maximum load that the UPS can support. A UPS rated for a particular watt or VA load remains subject to that output rating even when additional battery capacity is installed.
